The Australian Sports Technologies Network (ASTN) provide leadership in the commercialisation, development and promotion of Australian-inspired sports technologies.

Established in 2012, the ASTN is an industry-led Australian eco-system of organisations with a vested interest in sports technology development. This includes leading sports technologies businesses, national sporting organisations, research institutions, sports distributors & retailers, government agencies, service providers and investors.

ASTN programs are geared to assist Australian sports technology companies to scale and commercialise their technologies into international markets and assist universities and research institutions to commercialise projects.

ASTN-GSIC Pre-Accelerator Program: Cohort #3 Member

The Australian Sports Technologies Network (ASTN) in partnership with Global Sports Innovation Center (GSIC) powered by Microsoft delivered 'The Business of Sport' Sports Tech Pre-Accelerator Program in which I was selected as a participant in Cohort #3.

The program is a 10-week cohort-based pre-accelerator educational program consisting of a total of 20 sessions. A core focus of the program will support Startup Entrepreneurs to validate their on or off-field sports-tech business idea against competitors, vendors, and VC.

In between each module, participants have the opportunity to "Learn From the Best" by participating in interactive Q&A sessions with founders and leaders of leading international and Australian sports businesses who 'have been there, done that'.

The Idea

Academic research from the University of Texas confirms that a second screen actually complements the first (TV) and the two can coexist, rather than compete for attention during the viewing experience. “The rise of second screens does not pose a threat to first screen media – in fact, it’s an opportunity to pioneer complementary content and campaigns.” And regardless of the sport, the focus for advertisers should be on user experience – including proper syncing with the live event and making devices and apps simple to use.

My idea was to create a second-screen mobile application that would enhance the viewing experience of esport viewers and fans. The app would look to increase the opportunity for game developers and tournaments to increase commercial revenue through this platform, while also providing users with a variety of new tools to complement their first screen viewing activity.

Three main areas were focused on workshopping my sports-tech idea throughout the program. These areas are:

  1. Customer discovery,

  2. Market/competitor analysis,

  3. Business models.

“The program has improved my understanding of start-up best practices and grew my entrepreneurial skills.

I was able to learn from Australia’s leading sports innovators and collaborate with other entrepreneurs looking to validate their sportstech ideas.”
